Effective Spend Ranks Among Top 5 Best Companies to Work For in Austin

In October 2019, Built In Austin named Effective Spend #2 on their live ranking of the Best Small Companies to Work for in Austin. This list recognizes local companies with fewer than 100 employees that have strong benefits & perks, compensation packages and company culture. Since the list is a dynamic ranking, positions fluctuate throughout month, however, Effective Spend has remained in the top 5 companies on Built In’s October list.

2019 has been a record year for Effective Spend, with recognition on both the Inc 5000 and Austin Fast 50 lists of the fastest growing companies. Our company has seen exponential growth over the last few years, nearly doubling our revenue, staff and office space. But through it all, we have maintained an incredible culture of excellence, personal growth, inclusion and fun. We’ve worked hard to ensure our benefits and culture programs have scaled to meet the demands of our growing and evolving team.

Our Culture

From our foosball table to our bountiful snack bar, we’ve strive to make our office a place where employees enjoy coming to work every day. We provide plenty of opportunities for employees to get to know each other through team happy hours, social sports, volunteering events and game nights. We have a lot of fun perks, but we have a serious side, too! We offer competitive compensation and PTO, 401k matching, parking for all employees and medical coverage that extends to family members. We also invest heavily in employee training programs and foster a culture of “knowledge philanthropy” that encourages employees to share learnings and help each other build new skills.

Another key factor in our culture is our location. Since our humble beginnings 11 years ago on east 6th street we’ve grown and moved to four different office locations, but have always remained within the downtown area. Obviously, this means we love tacos, but this vibe has also guided our culture as we’ve grown, matching our style to the casual, community-focused and scrappy start-up culture prevalent in Austin. To accommodate our rapid growth, we’ve recently moved into a 10,000 square foot suite off of Lady Bird Lake with an incredible view of downtown and an easy walk to many nearby restaurants, bars, parks and trails. If you want to learn more, check out our culture page and our job openings. We’re always looking for good people to join our team!

How Built In Austin Ranks the Best Companies

Using the data they have gathered from companies in their seven locations, Built In aggregates lists of the top companies to work for, ranking them based on their unique methodology. These lists are broken down into 5 lists: the 100 best overall, the 50 best small companies, the 50 best midsize companies, the 50 best paying and the 50 with the best benefits. Companies can be on multiple lists, but “small companies” are limited to those with fewer than 100 employees while “midsize” is classified as 100 to 500 employees.

Methodology

Eligibility
First thing’s first, companies have to be eligible for ranking. They must claim and built out their Built In company profile, detailing perks, salaries and employee count. Once the profile is fleshed out, it will automatically become eligible for ranking and Built In will use the information in the profile to score the company against their cohort.

Ranking
Rankings are based on an algorithmic and empirical system, scaling different factors into a measurable score. At the highest level, it’s 50% employee salary rates and 50% benefits. Getting into the details, all benefits are ranked according to their importance to Built In Austin’s core audience. So, for example, having 401(K) matching is worth more than having beer on tap (Effective Spend offers both, BTW!). Companies are awarded a score based on the benefits they provide, adjusted for their relative values. The salaries portion is a little more straight forward. The median percentile is taken from a company’s submitted salaries and compared to the rest of the companies in the running. Final rankings are awarded based on these two factors, but with new companies becoming eligible and new benefits being added by companies currently listed, nothing is set in stone. Built In keeps their rankings current with their live online rankings that are updated frequently.

“Growth is built off culture,” said founder and CEO Brian Wulfe. “Reducing turnover and building morale through a positive work environment has always been a core tenant for Effective Spend. This recognition from Built in Austin is a sign that we are hitting that goal.”
